Response to the Australian War Memorial event
Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Ret’d) contributed the following remarks in response to Uphold & Recognise’s event at the Australian War Memorial on 17 May 2017.
I believe we can create meaningful recognition of Indigenous Australians by removing outdated terms from the Constitution and adopting an Australian Declaration of Recognition - a broad statement of recognition outside of the Constitution.
I also strongly support establishing an Indigenous body to advise the Parliament on Indigenous matters. It is vital that the voices and opinions of Indigenous Australians are heard in the processes of Parliament.
I believe these changes would deliver tangible, positive results for Indigenous Australians and allow the nation to move forward in a spirit of reconciliation and unity.
