Voice to parliament funded in Federal Budget

Last week the Federal Budget was announced. $7.3 million was allocated to an “Indigenous Voice to Parliament”. While there has been no accompanying announcement regarding, or clarification of, this allocation, it is clear that the Coalition has pledged to progress the Voice to Parliament if elected.

This means, effectively, that there is now bi-partisan support for the Voice to Parliament. This is an excellent outcome. But what does this mean?

Most likely, this means that the $7.3 million has been allocated to progress the recommendation of the Joint Select Committee headed by Julian Leeser, co-founder of Uphold & Recognise, and Senator Patrick Dodson. That recommendation was that Parliament engage in a process of ‘co-design’ with Indigenous leaders.

While much of the detail is missing, this is welcome news. Please stay subscribed to the Uphold & Recognise newsletter to be kept up to date with the latest developments.
